How to register for a Sunday Tour?
No need, just turn up at the meeting location at the advertised time.
How much is it?
Free! But of course, you are encouraged to support the tour. You can show your one-off support through Buy Me A Coffee.
Do you get paid by the cafes?
No, I do not receive a commission from the cafes we visit.
It’s an insane model but I pay for all costs on tour and hope participants will see value in the work I do and support the tour.
How long are the tours?
Sunday Tours usually finish up by lunch time (12:30 / 1PM).
What if I’m a beginner/ don’t know anything about coffee?
All tours are beginner-friendly. I take time to explain the basics and there are plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
Do I need to bring anything?
Please bring a small cup for coffee tasting!
What if I don’t like coffee?
You’re still welcome to come along 🙂 Coffee is extremely diverse.
I usually say that the reason you don’t like coffee is probably because you haven’t found one you like yet.
But of course, you don’t need to taste if you don’t want to.
Is it just coffee?
Yes – the primary focus of these tours is exploring specialty coffee. In this format, specialty coffee is our lens for exploring Sydney.
You get to learn about what specialty coffee is; the places and people who serve them and you get to see a side of Sydney that is off the beaten path.
You also get to connect with like-minded people and the people who make up Sydney’s specialty coffee community.
What if I don’t have a good sense of taste?
Most of us start here. It takes a huge amount of practice to develop a refined palate.
To make things a little trickier, Mother Nature has built in blind spots in people’s palates – meaning while one person might be absolutely dumbstruck by a clear note of pineapple they are perceiving you might “just taste coffee” (I’ve been in this situation and in the reverse situation and it’s surreal). That’s just the way it is with the diversity of living things.
Refining your palate is as much an exercise in learning about yourself as it is about coffee!
Do you drink just black coffee?
We occasionally order a milk coffee or signature drink to share but we mainly sample filter coffee.
This is so we can taste and learn about the characteristics of different coffee varieties, origins, processing methods and the skills of their producers.
You are always welcome to order a coffee for yourself during the tour.
Do you only do tours on Sundays?
For the moment. Saturday tours will happen but even I don’t know when.
Why Sunday though?
It’s partly a logistics issue.
I have a day job that takes up my time Monday to Friday, so having a day for last minute preparations is handy. The downside is, some cafes are open on Saturday but not Sunday.
What about during the week?
Come to a Spro Sprint.
It’s so early! 😭
Spro Sprints are early but that’s the idea. Have your morning dose of coffee in good company and then start your day!
But your Sunday Tours are also so early!! 😭😭💔
I think 9:45/ 10am is the optimum start time – if we started later, cafes might be closed when get to them. Also people might be hesitant to have coffee after midday
Do you work in coffee?
No. I’m just a coffee nerd who speaks endlessly about specialty coffee.
Why did you start these coffee tours?
I started Sydney Coffee Tour to address two matters of critical importance: where to get specialty coffee in Sydney and; explaining what specialty coffee is.
I believe in education, curiosity and diversity, which is what I find in the world of coffee.
